Blind Spot – Hidden Biases of Good People

I had a fascinating conversation with a delegate the other day about the book ‘Blind Spot’, which it turned out we’d both read. In it, the authors explain how even ‘good’ people have many hidden biases! Whether in the form of stereotypes, subjective opinions or prejudices; challenging our own perception not only leads to a clearer, more objective mind but a more harmonious, productive culture. The visual trick below proves our brains’ ability to fill in gaps, which can sometimes lead us to false assumptions.

Have a go yourself: Cover your left eye, and focus your right eye on the dot. From arms length gradualy move your head toward the screen, maintaining your focus on the dot. As you get closer, the cross will dissapear (that’s your retinal scotoma, aka blindspot, showing up!). But the REALLY interesting thing is, in the absence of the spot, our brains fill in the blanks with what it thinks should be there! So, beware your hidden biases.
